Dr. Shaunaisea Henderson is the Academic Coordinator for Dallas Institute of Funeral Service while also currently serving as an instructor in the English Department. She holds a BA in English and History, MA in Secondary Education with an emphasis in Special Education, and an Ed.D. in Educational Leadership and Curriculum & Instruction from Grand Canyon University-with a focus on why, Equitable Education does not mean Equal Education.
She has worked in education for 31 years, in a range of diverse roles, from teacher, writing specialist, a three-time building Principal, Teacher and Leader Development Coach, Curriculum Writer, Chief Academic Officer, Special Education Compliance Officer, Academic Support Director for Student Support Services, Professional Development Director, and Educational Consultant (Advocate) for families of students in private and public schools that receive Special Education Services (IDEA).
Dr. Henderson’s teaching philosophy starts with the belief that change and inspiration happen through conversation. These conversations bring people closer to the heart of a shared concern, which gives them new eyes to see both the problems and possibilities and sets the stage for taking creative action. It is through these authentic conversations that we build upon the input and perspectives of others across the academic community to generate new insights and ideas that inspire further growth within ourselves. Moreover, it also enables actionable change in our teaching and learning environments. This ability to discover new meaning is where the magic of conversation exists. It is here that something is created that would never have surfaced without the process of collaboratively exploring multiple points of view.
Dr. Henderson has published an article in Region 10 Reach! Magazine, titled “A Teacher Gave Me Wings", which focuses on a personal experience with a student she once taught who is the daughter of a famous athlete. She also runs Solace Therapy, a counseling program for women ages 18 and up. In addition to her academic and counseling work, Dr. Henderson has received several teaching awards (Lancaster ISD Teacher of the Year, Core Values Award, Leader of the Year Award). As well as she is a member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.
Outside of academia, Dr. Henderson enjoys spending time with her husband of 31 years, traveling, home design, watching black and white movies, reading spiritual novels, taking care of her fur grandbabies (Bella and Pepper), and online shopping.
Dr. Henderson is currently working to shape the way battered women see themselves after leaving abusive relationships, in Beauty Beyond the Bruises a social-emotional-spiritual enriching group for women. Dr. Henderson is honored to be a part of Pierce Colleges and is excited about the positive communication and collaboration she will experience here.
