JOB DESCRIPTION
Performs individual and assisted recovery/removal and transfer of decedent remains from death locations following established protocols. Ensures proper care, custody, control, and safekeeping of decedent remains during recovery and transport along with other evidence and personal items collected or received. Assists with receipt and release of decedents remains and may provide other administrative or technical support for the Office of the Medical Examiner or other clients of the company.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Drives a company vehicle independently or with staff to locations, as dispatched, to recover decedent remains, evidence, and personal items and transports to requested designated facilities, following established protocols. Ensures the proper care, custody, control, and safekeeping of decedent remains and other items collected or received.
  2. Performs decedent remains acceptance and release activities following established protocols, including thorough review of related paperwork to ensure accuracy and completeness; performs data entry using company software. May inventory and securely store evidence/personal effects, along with decedents.
  3. Performs administrative and technical support duties: maintaining records, receiving vendors at company facility, maintaining decedent case inventory, retrieving specimens, transporting specimens to laboratory, and assisting with supply inventory.
  4. Cleans, organizes, and stocks company vehicle with necessary supplies. Monitors vehicle operational and mileage status; fuels vehicle and obtains needed services.
  5. Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Experience and Training:

Graduation from an accredited high school/GED Program. Two (2) years of work-related experience or 30 hours of college or combination of the two.

Special Requirements/Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Ability to communicate effectively and maintain professional relationships with others. Ability to maintain accurate records and operate a computer and cell phone device. Ability to navigate locations such as secluded wooded areas, river bottoms or industrial sites in all types of weather conditions. Must demonstrate understanding of chemical and biological safe handling procedures. Work hours vary based on the needs of the 24/7 operation. This position is deemed “Essential” for inclement weather and emergency management purposes. Must pass criminal background check and driving record check. Must be willing to submit to a drug test, if ever requested, prior to and during employment. Must possess a valid Texas Driver’s License, with a good driving record and reliable transportation.

Physical/Environmental Requirements:

Primary work area is varied and based on the location of the decedent remains requiring recovery/removal and transport. Locations frequently involve outdoor sites, highways, roadways, homes and hospitals. Travel to locations in a company vehicle is required. Access to the death scene may require non-vehicular travel to reach the scene. Lifting, pulling, carrying and manipulating decedents and/or other heavy, bulky or irregular objects is also required. Secondary work area is morgue/autopsy room, with routine, potential exposure to biological and/or chemical hazards. Routine exposure to odorous specimens and chemicals and graphic visual situations. Prolonged, extensive, or considerable standing/walking; lifting, positioning, pushing, or transferring of bodies; lifting of supplies and equipment; considerable reaching, stooping, and bending; manual dexterity and visual acuity sufficient to execute standard protocols.
