Under the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, individuals with disabilities are guaranteed certain protection and rights to accommodations based upon documentation. The documentation must indicate that the disability substantially limits some major life activity.
The student’s process of requesting accommodation begins with completing the Accommodation Form and obtaining other documentation, as needed, to confirm the disability. Accommodations cannot be determined until the Accommodation Form and documentation have been submitted. Students seeking accommodation are encouraged to complete the Accommodation Form and submit documentation before the quarter begins. Doing so will ensure accommodations are determined in a timely manner.
Accommodations should in no way compromise the essential elements or objectives of the curriculum. Accommodations will be designed to meet a student’s disability-related needs without fundamentally altering the nature of the instructional program.
Process for Establishing Reasonable Accommodations
1. Student receives ADA request packet from a campus official or from the campus website.
2. Student completes the packet with the help of their medical professional, who provides their assessment of what the student should receive and supporting documentation.
3. The student sends their packet to a secure e-mail address ([email protected]).
4. The committee chair schedules a meeting of the ADA committee to review the packet.
5. Committee reviews the request and approves/denies accommodations.
6. Student is informed of approval or denial of accommodations. The campus dean and the student’s academic advisor are included on this communication.
7. The student is responsible for notifying their instructors each quarter of their approved accommodations. The accommodations are not retroactive.
8. The student is required to reapply prior to each fall quarter to verify that all previously assigned accommodations are still accurate.
Accommodation Appeal Process
1. The student has the right to appeal the accommodation decision. If the student wishes to appeal, the committee reconvenes with alternates and a single member of the original committee to review the appeal.
2. Alternates vote to sustain or modify the original decision.
3. The student is informed of the appeal decision. This decision is final.
