Accreditation is a voluntary activity initiated by the institution that requires a rigorous self-evaluation and an independent, objective appraisal of the overall educational quality by peers. Accreditation emphasizes quality assurance and a commitment to continuous quality enhancement.
State Authority to Operate
State licensing agencies, higher education commissions, and other bureaus for private postsecondary education grant institutions the authority to operate in their state.
Federal Eligibility for Student Financial Aid
The US Department of Education determines institutional eligibility to participate in federal financial aid offered to students and enforces regulations governing the adherence to federal student financial aid programs. The Department relies on the accreditation of the institutions to determine institutional eligibility.
ASSOCIATE OF APPLIED SCIENCE (AAS) (Includes both Embalming and Funeral Directing)
We offer an Associate of Applied Science (AAS), which is an undergraduate academic degree (covering both Embalming and Funeral Directing) as well as the Funeral Director’s Program which is a certificate program (covering ONLY Funeral Directing and NO Embalming).
The Associate of Applied Science (A.A.S.) curriculum at Dallas Institute of Funeral Service is a blend of theoretical and practical fundamentals of funeral service as well as selected courses in the liberal arts. The program is offered in academic quarters, with each quarter consisting of only eleven weeks. This program can be completed in fifteen months with no transfer credits or possibly as little as one year with the appropriate credits to transfer. Students that complete an Associate of Applied Science degree also have options to transfer to select colleges and universities to pursue a Bachelor’s degree.
Texas Workforce Commission - Certificate of Approval
Dallas Institute of Funeral Service has met the legal requirements prescribed in Chapter 132, Texas Education Code, and is hereby authorized to operate as outlined in the application submitted in accordance with Section 132.052 under the provisions of that act for the period specified below. Continued approval will be subject to compliance with the legal requirements for career schools and colleges and with the application submitted to the Texas Workforce Commission as the official school catalog. The approved courses of instruction are the Associate of Applied Science Degree in Funeral Service, the Funeral Director’s Program, and the Funeral Director’s Program Online.
Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board – Certificate of Authorization
Dallas Institute of Funeral Service has demonstrated that it meets the standards set forth in the rules of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and qualifies for an exemption pursuant to Subchapter G, Chapter 61, Texas Education Code and, as defined in Chapter 7.3 of Board rules, from certain, but not all regulations; This exemption will continue as long as the institution maintains its accreditation status with the American Board of Funeral Service Education (ABFSE) and standards acceptable to the Coordinating Board. Dallas Institute of Funeral Service is authorized to conduct courses, grant degrees, grant credit toward degrees, and to use certain protected academic terms in the State of Texas until expiration of its current grant of accreditation.
Dallas Institute also maintains approvals from the US Department of Health and Human Services, State Boards, Commissions and Agencies of Funeral Service, State Approval for Veteran Training, State Approval for Vocational Rehabilitation Training, and the Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Naturalization Service.
FUNERAL DIRECTOR’S PROGRAM AND FUNERAL DIRECTOR’S PROGRAM ONLINE
(Includes ONLY Funeral Directing and NO Embalming)
The Funeral Director's Program curriculum at Dallas Institute of Funeral Service is designed to prepare a student to practice as a Funeral Director in the States of Texas, Louisiana or Missouri. The curriculum is a blend of theoretical and practical fundamentals of funeral service offered in academic quarters. This program can be completed in six months on campus or one year by distance learning.
This Funeral Director's Program is designed to meet specific state or professional needs. It is not accredited by the American Board of Funeral Service Education since it does not include instruction in the following areas: embalming and related science courses and the general education courses. Students graduating from this program are not eligible to take the National Board Examination or any state board examination for which graduation from an ABFSE accredited program is required.
